MOMENTUM 101 · OCTOBER 2026
Your questions.
Our answers.
Our October webinar sparked some important questions about starting and growing an independent insurance brokerage. From broking and market access to funding, client ownership and exit planning, we've brought the answers together in one place.
Broking and market access.
How does broking work in practice, and what does that mean for my day-to-day?
When you join Momentum, you keep doing what you are best at: building relationships, winning clients and delivering advice. The broking legwork — approaching the market, negotiating terms and managing submissions — is handled by our in-house broking team. This is not about removing you from the process. It is about removing the parts that consume time without building your business. You submit your presentation through Acturis, tell the team what you need and when you need it, and they work to your deadline. You stay in control of the client relationship throughout.
I have spent years building relationships with underwriters. What happens to those?
Those relationships are an asset, and we use them. When a specific underwriter relationship is going to make the difference on a placement, we want to know about it. You can brief the broking team on your preferred markets, flag the contacts who know your book and specify where your standing should be used. The team works with that information, and where your standing with a specific underwriter is what makes the difference, they bring you in. For the majority of placements, our team handles the market efficiently without needing to draw on personal relationships.
But for the cases where your standing with a specific underwriter matters, that is exactly when we bring you in. You do not lose those connections. You use them where they actually count rather than spending them on routine business the team can handle faster.
What can I handle directly, and when does the broking team step in?
You have full access to e-trade through Acturis, which means straightforward risks can be placed directly by you without going through the broking team. You are not waiting for someone else to handle business you can process in minutes.
For more complex placements and anything where negotiation and market access matters, the team takes on the work. But this is not a one-size-fits-all model. Where you have a genuine specialism, or a direct market relationship that adds real value, we will explore direct access.
Our broking team is experienced, commercially minded and genuinely invested in the result. They are an extension of your business, not a barrier between you and the market. The goal is always the best outcome for your client, and sometimes that means stepping back and letting your expertise and your relationships do the work.
How quickly does the team respond, and will I be kept updated?
The team works to your deadlines and your client needs. When you submit a presentation you specify your required timeline and the team prioritises accordingly. Managing client expectations depends on knowing where things stand, and that is not something we leave you to chase.
Compliance and business support.
What compliance support does Momentum provide?
As your principal firm, Momentum carries the regulatory responsibility that comes with FCA authorisation. That covers oversight, the compliance framework and the day-to-day support you need to operate with confidence. In practice, that means you are not navigating regulation alone. Our compliance team is available to support you on anything from client file reviews to regulatory queries. As FCA expectations of network quality increase, having a robust compliance infrastructure behind you matters more than it ever has. We take that seriously so you can focus on your clients.
What support does Momentum provide with systems, HR and finance?
We provide access to Acturis along with training and ongoing support to help you get the most from the platform. Your own hardware, laptops and phones are your responsibility, but you will have everything you need from a systems perspective from day one. On recruitment, we can review CVs and help you assess whether candidates have the right experience for your business. We can also provide contracts and advice on remuneration, whatever you need we are there to support. On finance, Momentum manages client money as the principal firm.
Your own business accounting and tax arrangements remain your responsibility, so we recommend appointing an accountant early. We can signpost you to people who understand the broker world if that helps.
What happens as my business grows and I need more resource?
Growth is the goal, but it creates its own pressure. Knowing the right support is there when you need it is part of what separates a business that scales from one that stalls. Momentum 360 is our in-house resourcing solution, and it is something you will not find replicated elsewhere in the market. It gives you access to experienced account handling, claims support and day-to-day administrative resource on a genuinely flexible basis, scaling up or down as your business demands.
You are not locked into permanent headcount before your income justifies it, and you are not left searching the market for quality support at the moment you need it most. Finding high-quality support at the right time should never be the thing that limits your growth. Momentum 360 exists specifically to make sure it is not. And if you reach the point where you want to build your own permanent team, our knowledge of the market comes into its own.
Fifteen years at the centre of the independent commercial broking world means our insight into where the strongest account executives and producers are is second to none. We know the market, we know the people and we know when they might be ready to move. That is not something a job board or a recruiter who dips in and out of the sector can replicate. It comes from being genuinely embedded in this industry every day.
Commercial terms and funding.
How does the commission structure work?
We operate on a commission-split model. There are no joining fees, no hidden charges and no bolt-on costs. Training, compliance support, systems access, call recording, transaction processing and broking infrastructure are all included in the agreed split. You will not find yourself being invoiced separately for the things that should simply be part of the service. The exact terms are based on your business plan, your experience and your growth ambitions.
We agree a structure that is commercially sustainable for you from day one, not one that looks attractive on paper and quietly erodes your margin in practice. We will walk you through exactly what is included and what your split means in real terms before you commit to anything.
Does Momentum offer funding to help launch a new brokerage?
Yes. We have two funding options available, and the right one will depend on your circumstances and your business plan. We approach those conversations without pressure. Once we understand your plans we will tell you clearly what is available and what makes sense for your situation. A note on funding and equity terms Equity feels cheap when you are starting out. When there is no income to protect, handing over a percentage of your business in exchange for support or funding can seem like a straightforward trade.
It rarely feels that way once the business is established and that percentage starts representing serious money. The decisions you make about equity and control at the outset are among the hardest to unwind later. Before you commit to any funding arrangement, whether with Momentum or anyone else, understand exactly what you are giving away and what it would cost you to resolve it once your business has real value. Compare every option available to you.
Push to minimise the equity you hand over from the start, because protecting your ownership now is significantly easier than recovering it after the fact. We will always be transparent about what our terms mean in practice, including what we take, why and what happens to it over time. We would encourage you to ask the same questions of every network you speak to. The ones who are reluctant to answer tell you something important.
Can I set my own client fees?
Yes. The administration fees you charge are yours to determine, based on the value you deliver and the clients you work with. The only requirement is that fees are fair, transparent and in line with your obligations under the FCA's consumer duty framework. That is a professional standard, not a constraint we place on you.
Can directors take a minimum salary and dividends for tax efficiency?
Yes. As an AR you operate your own limited company and are responsible for your own remuneration arrangements. We recommend discussing the most tax-efficient approach with your accountant, who can advise based on your individual circumstances. If you do not yet have an accountant who understands the broker world, we can point you in the right direction.
Setting up your brokerage.
How long does the process take, and can I start while still employed?
The journey from first conversation to launch has two distinct phases. The first is getting to know each other: understanding your background, working through your business plan and agreeing commercial terms. That part of the process moves at whatever pace suits you and your circumstances. Once terms are agreed, the formal process typically takes around three months. That covers FCA approval, getting your Acturis office set up and making sure your branding is ready for day one. A significant amount of the preparation can happen while you are still employed.
The point at which you need to act more visibly is when you register your limited company, as company registration is publicly accessible. We will talk you through the timing carefully so you are not in a position where you are exposed before you are ready. References are required as part of the process. We will never approach your current employer without your permission. By the time you launch, your Acturis office is set up, your branding is in place and you are ready to trade from day one.
Will Momentum tell me if I am not ready?
Yes. And it means more than it might sound. Onboarding a new broker partner represents a significant investment from Momentum, in time, in resource and in genuine commercial commitment. We spend a substantial amount on getting that process right. So when we back you, we genuinely back you. That is not a phrase we use carelessly. Our track record of supporting brokers who go on to build successful, sustainable businesses is something we are proud of and want to protect. We do not always get it right, but the commitment we make when we say yes is real.
That same investment is precisely why we will be straight with you if the timing is not there yet. If something is missing, we will tell you what it is and what it would take to get you to that point. We will work with you to get there if that is what is needed. That conversation is not a door closing. In many cases it is the most useful one we have.
What does a successful first year look like, and what happens if I fall short of targets?
As a general guide, we would expect a new broker partner to be working towards a book of around £250,000 in gross written premium by the end of year one. But that number does not tell the whole story. Revenue is one measure. Building your reputation, winning your first referrals, getting your processes running smoothly and understanding where your real growth will come from: those milestones matter just as much, particularly in a year where you are building from scratch. If things are not progressing as expected, your Business Relationship Manager will not just review the numbers with you.
They will get into the detail, identify what is holding the business back and work with you to get things on track. That might mean adjusting your approach to new business development, bringing in additional support through Momentum 360 or rethinking where you are spending your time. The support is active, not passive. You will not be left to figure it out alone.
Contracts, client ownership and exit planning.
Who owns my clients?
You do. The relationships you build are yours. That should be a simple statement, and in our contract it is. If you decide to leave the Momentum network, your clients can move with you, subject to the relevant regulatory requirements. We do not take ownership of your book and we do not impose restrictions that make leaving commercially punishing. That position is written plainly in our contract. There is no complex language around this point, no subclauses designed to confuse and no small print that changes the meaning on closer reading.
Client ownership is one of the most important things to check when comparing networks. If the clause runs to multiple paragraphs and requires a lawyer to interpret, that is worth pausing on. A network that is confident in what it offers does not need to bury the answer. We are happy to walk you through our terms clearly, and to sit them alongside the terms of any other network you are considering.
How do Momentum's contract terms differ from other networks?
A contract that works for both parties should be balanced. One of the clearest signals that it is not is indemnity clauses that flow only one way, placing liability squarely on the broker while the network carries none. Look equally carefully at penalty clauses. Some agreements are littered with provisions that allow the network to levy additional charges under circumstances that are loosely defined or left open to interpretation. These clauses can appear minor in isolation. Across a contract, and over the life of a business relationship, they can mean something very different.
Beyond the wording itself, pay close attention to how a network responds when you challenge a clause. Ask them directly: what is this clause designed to protect against, and in what circumstances would it and would it not apply? Then ask them to put that answer in writing. A network that understands its own contract and stands behind it will have no difficulty doing so. Reluctance to answer, vague responses or an unwillingness to commit anything to paper is itself an answer worth having before you sign. Our approach is to keep the balance of power with you.
We are happy to walk through our contract in plain terms, explain the intent behind every clause and put that in writing where it is helpful. That is the standard we would encourage you to apply to any network you are considering.
What happens when I want to exit, retire or sell my business?
We have structured succession planning options available and this is a conversation we take seriously from the start, not just when you are ready to leave. Where possible, we work to identify another broker partner within the network who is well placed to take on your book, based on location, client profile and relationship fit. Our directors will work with you to review the value of your business, agree commercial terms and structure a transition that works for both you and your clients. The earlier you think about succession, the more options you have.
It is never too early to have that conversation.
Can other Momentum broker partners approach my clients?
We do not impose non-compete restrictions between broker partners because in practice it is rarely a live issue. Clients stay with the people they trust, and that is exactly how it should be. Strong client relationships are the best protection your book has.
Additional services, events and community.
Can I support clients with personal lines requirements?
Yes. Through Momentum Marketplace you can handle personal lines requirements for your commercial clients, keeping those relationships in one place without moving away from your core focus. You also have access to personal lines e-trade through Acturis for straightforward risks.
What about employee benefits, health or complementary lines?
Momentum has a private medical insurance specialist within the network. Broker partners can refer clients with PMI requirements and receive remuneration on that business without having to source or manage the placement themselves. It is a straightforward way to add value to existing client relationships without moving away from your core commercial focus. If your clients have needs outside your own specialism, talk to us. We would rather help you find a solution within the network than see that business go elsewhere.
Are there opportunities to meet other broker partners and insurers?
Yes, and we think this is one of the underrated parts of being in the Momentum network. We run an annual conference that brings together broker partners, the Momentum team and insurer partners. It is one of the best opportunities to build relationships across the network, share what is working and spend time with people who understand the business you are in. We also run regional roadshows where our directors come to you, share updates and have proper conversations about how your business is developing.
If you want to hear from broker partners directly before you speak to anyone at Momentum, our podcast is the place to start. Momentum Meets is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon. Every episode is an honest conversation with someone who has made this move, talking about what it actually took. No script and no agenda. If you are weighing up whether this is the right decision, it is worth an hour of your time. Being part of Momentum is not just access to infrastructure.
It is access to a community of commercial brokers who have made the same decision you have and are further along the road. That is worth more than it sounds when you are building something from scratch.
