AR NETWORK COMPARISON

Movo vs Momentum: which broker network fits your business?

If you're comparing broker networks for your insurance brokerage, Movo Partnership and Momentum Broker Solutions offer two different approaches to the Appointed Representative model.

The biggest difference isn't whether either network supports independent brokers. It's how much of running the brokerage you want to keep doing yourself.

Movo vs Momentum

What is the difference between the two broker networks?

Movo and Momentum are both UK Appointed Representative networks, but the experience of running your brokerage within each model is different. The key question is how much you want to handle yourself and how much specialist support you want around you.

More of your time can stay with clients, relationships and winning business.
Who does the broking?
You manage placement and insurer relationships directly. Limited broking support is available where needed, with some services charged separately.

Commercial model
Fixed network fee, with insurer commission retained by the broker.

Day-to-day support
More of the work and responsibility stays inside your own brokerage.
More specialist people and support sit around your brokerage through Momentum's teams.

The biggest difference is where the work and responsibility of running the brokerage sit.

The practical difference

How much of the broking do you want to handle yourself?

This is where the two models begin to feel very different in practice.

With Movo, broking stays much more firmly inside your own business. You manage placement and insurer relationships directly. Limited central broking support is available where required, with additional costs applying to some services.

With Momentum, the Broking Team handles the market-facing work. You provide the knowledge of the client and the risk, while Momentum manages insurer relationships, placement, negotiation and follow-up.

Both approaches can work. The difference is whether you want placement to remain a significant part of your own working day.

The question to ask yourself:

Where do I want to spend my time as the brokerage grows?

Market access

Access is only part of the picture when placing business.

Both networks provide access to a broad range of insurers, MGAs and specialist markets. The more meaningful difference is how those relationships are managed.

Movo

The broker works directly with insurers and develops those relationships within their own brokerage. For brokers who want to remain close to individual markets and underwriters, that level of direct involvement may be attractive.

Momentum

Momentum's Broking Team manages insurer and MGA relationships. The brokerage benefits from relationships already held across Momentum rather than needing to build and maintain them independently.

It isn't just which markets you can access. It's who is responsible for making that access work.

Comparing broker networks

Compare the whole network model.

Choosing between insurance broker networks is about more than comparing a headline percentage or monthly fee.

Movo and Momentum are both routes into the Appointed Representative model, but the way each broker network operates is different. The commercial structure, broking model, market access, operational support and responsibilities retained by the broker all need to be considered together.

The right broker network is therefore not simply the one with the lowest apparent cost. It is the model that best fits how you want to run, support and grow your brokerage.

The commercial model

Compare the whole operating model, not just the percentage.

The two commercial structures work differently, so comparing a headline fee with an income share doesn't tell you the full cost of running the brokerage.

Movo

Movo uses a fixed-fee model where brokers retain insurer commission. Because more of the activity required to run the brokerage remains within your own business, the wider calculation includes the people, systems and services you need alongside the network fee.

Momentum

Momentum uses an income-sharing model, with broking, compliance and operational support included around the brokerage. If you don't earn, Momentum doesn't earn. That means we're directly invested in helping your business succeed and grow.

Momentum invests more than £2,000 in every new Momentum AR before earning a penny from the relationship. That includes setting up your office, configuring Acturis and supporting the authorisation process.

Under Movo's model, some of those setup and system costs are charged separately.

The more useful question is: what will the whole brokerage cost me to operate?

Funding

Funding choices can shape the ownership of your business.

Starting and growing a brokerage can create funding needs. The routes available through each network are different.

Movo

Movo's Accelerator programme can provide startup investment in exchange for equity in the brokerage.

Momentum

Momentum can provide lending where appropriate for startup costs, cash flow, recruitment and growth. Separate investment through Momentum Equity Partners is also available, typically taking a 25% minority stake where that structure is appropriate for both parties.

Equity and lending solve the same funding challenge in different ways. The right route depends on your plans for the business.

Finding the right fit

Which model fits the brokerage you want to build?

By now, the distinction is less about which network has more features and more about which way of working suits you.

Movo may suit you if...
Momentum may suit you if...
Your working day
You want broking, placement and insurer relationships to remain a major part of your own role.
You want more of your working day centred on clients, relationships and winning business.
Support
You're comfortable keeping more of the work and responsibility within your own brokerage.
You want experienced broking, compliance and operational teams around your business.
Commercial approach
A fixed-fee structure where you retain insurer commission works for the way you want to run the business.
An income-sharing structure where more support is included works for the way you want to grow.

Neither model is automatically better. The difference is what you want your role to look like.

Already with Movo?

What worked at launch may feel different as you grow.

Choosing a different Principal doesn't mean the original decision was wrong. The needs of a brokerage can change as the book becomes larger and the workload becomes more complex.

If more of your time is being absorbed by placement, administration and running the business, you may start looking for a network with more people around you. The question isn't whether Movo is a good network. It's whether its model still suits what you need now.

Common questions

Comparing broker networks in more detail.

What is the main difference between Movo and Momentum?

The biggest difference is the operating model.

Movo places greater emphasis on brokers managing placement and insurer relationships themselves. Momentum puts an expert central Broking Team behind the brokerage, with that team handling market placement in most cases alongside wider compliance and operational support.

The right model therefore depends partly on how much of the day-to-day broking workload you want to retain yourself.

Is Movo cheaper than Momentum?

The models are structured differently, so comparing only the headline fee or commission share can be misleading.

Movo uses a fixed-fee model while Momentum primarily operates through income sharing. A useful comparison should include the wider cost of operating the brokerage, the work you retain yourself and the support included within each model.

Who handles the broking with Momentum?

In most cases, Momentum's expert Broking Team manages insurer and MGA relationships and handles market placement on behalf of the brokerage.

The Broker Partner remains focused on the client relationship, understanding the risk, providing advice and giving the Broking Team the information and insight needed to achieve the right placement.

This means you have experienced broking capability behind your business without needing to carry the full placement workload yourself.

Can I speak directly to insurers if I join Momentum?

In most cases, Momentum's Broking Team manages insurer and MGA relationships and handles placement on behalf of the brokerage.

On more complex risks, there can be situations where direct discussion with an insurer or underwriter is useful as part of the placement process. In those circumstances, the Broker Partner can be brought into the discussion alongside the Broking Team.

Direct insurer contact therefore supports complex placement where it adds value rather than replacing the Broking Team's role in routine market placement.

Who owns my clients with Momentum?

Your client relationships remain yours. Momentum does not operate a competing direct client brokerage and does not take ownership of your clients as part of the standard AR relationship.

Does Momentum take equity in my brokerage?

Equity is not a requirement of joining Momentum or accessing its core support.

Lending may be available where appropriate. For larger growth, acquisition or succession opportunities, separate minority equity investment may also be considered through Momentum Equity Partners.

Does Movo take equity in my brokerage?

Equity is not part of Movo's standard network arrangement.

Its separate Accelerator programme can provide start-up investment in exchange for an equity interest. Individual terms and arrangements should be confirmed directly with Movo.

Which broker network is best for an independent insurance broker?

There isn't one network that is right for every broker.

Consider how much broking and placement responsibility you want to retain, the commercial structure, market access, operational support, funding options and how the model will work as your brokerage grows.

Can I move from Movo to Momentum?

An Appointed Representative can change Principal, subject to the terms of its existing agreement and the regulatory and operational steps involved in moving the business.

Before making a decision, it is important to understand areas such as your notice period, remaining fees or contractual obligations, policy migration, PI arrangements and the practical transfer of your business.

Momentum can talk through what a move would involve before you decide whether changing network is right for your business.
